A couple of years back, bunk beds were relegated to kid’s rooms and dorms. Modern-day bunk beds integrate numerous space-saving features like cubbies, shelves, drawers, and desks and come in different finishes, styles, and configurations.

However, there are still concerns about the strength and weight capacity for overweight adults. As an overweight person, I know how scary it is to sleep in a bunk bed that might collapse under you.

To help this problem, I’ve taken the liberty to prepare a list of the best selling bunk beds for obese people. From my research and review, I especially loved the DHP Twin-Over-Futon Convertible Couch and Bed.

Heavy Duty Bunk Beds

If you love multi-functional furniture, then this convertible futon bunk bed will capture your heart. The top bunk accommodates a twin mattress and supports up to 200 lbs, while the bottom bunk accommodates a single mattress and supports 600 lbs. The lower bunk can transform into a couch or bed when needed.

The bed’s frame is made from metal and has two ladders on either side. Moreover, it has a metallic finish that blends with different décor themes. The top bunk has a simple guardrail that prevents the top sleeper from falling off. There’s enough space between the bunks for one to sit upright when relaxing in the futon comfortably.

I should point out that it comes in many heavy pieces that can be a pain to assemble. But once it’s done, the bed offers tremendous value.

Pros

  • 600 lbs futon weight limit
  • Space-saving design
  • Multi-functional design
  • Sleek look
  • Has no sharp edges

Cons

  • The soldering on the joints could be better
  • Switching between the bed and futon modes is troublesome

A perfect combination of fun, beauty, and function. Max & Lily made this twin bed from solid New Zealand pine wood with a non-toxic, low VOC finish. The solid wood frame supports 400 lbs on each bunk and has stable metal-on-metal connections that don’t loosen with time. The top bunk is connected with a reversible ladder that has anti-slip steps. It’s low height, so kids can use it without help.

The classic slatted design blends with different décor styles. But like the DHP Twin-Over-Futon Convertible Couch and Bed, the assembly can be a pain.

The bunks accommodate twin-size mattresses. However, Max & Lily recommends using 5-inch thick mattresses and not exceeding 8-inch mattresses.

Pros

  • Has a nice smell of fresh wood
  • Beautiful slatted design
  • Solid and sturdy
  • 400lb weight capacity on both beds
  • Perfect for low ceilings

Cons

  • The assembly instructions could be better

Dorel prides itself in creating trendy furniture that is easy to assemble and perfect for smaller rooms. This Living Moon Full over Full Bunk Bed isn’t any different. I love that it has a traditional design that incorporates an integrated ladder and dual USB charging ports.

The wooden bed frame is strong enough to support 500 lbs (250 lbs on each bunk) and is relatively easy to assemble. Unlike other heavy-duty bunk beds, Dorel Living Moon Full over Full Bunk Bed easily separates into two full-size beds.

The space between the bunks is good enough for an adult to sit. However, they’ll have to bend their neck a little.

Pros

  • 1-year limited warranty
  • Sturdy and doesn’t squeak
  • Built-in USB
  • Great height

Cons

  • You might have to add extra slats for the bottom bed to accommodate a foam mattress
  • The ladder doesn’t move

This is another quality heavy-duty bunk bed by DHP. Like the Twin-over-Futon, this bunk bed is made with a steel frame that’s strong enough to support 200 lbs and 400 lbs on the top and lower bunks, respectively.

The bed has two integrated side ladders for versatility, which offer just enough comfort and durability. The metallic slats are properly secured and evenly spaced to provide breathability and optimal support.

Pros

  • Space-saving
  • Strong and sturdy steel frame
  • Stylish design
  • Secured metal slats

Cons

  • The fixing screws cross-thread easily
  • Assembly is a pain

Powell Heavy Metal Bunk Bed

This twin-over-twin bunk bed is designed to handle the pressures of youth development regular bunk beds cannot. The pewter metal frame can handle 800 lbs (400 lbs for each bunk). On the side is a strong step ladder that offers easier access to the top bed.

But what is most impressive about this heavy-duty bunk bed is that it can transform into separate twin beds. The fact that the step ladder isn’t connected to the lower bunk help make this conversion easier. Though some assembly is required, it’s relatively simple.

Pros

  • Simple easy to follow instructions
  • Solid construction
  • It’s quiet
  • 800 lbs weight limit
  • Can detach into two separate beds

Cons

  • Easy to mix up the bunks since they aren’t labeled
  • The ladder steps hurt your feet
  • The ladder goes on one side bed

If design and space are at the top of your checklist and you fancy triple bunk beds but without the minimal space between bunks, then this Olela Twin over Full Bunk Bed is it for you.

The overall design is beautiful and well-finished. The transition from a full-size bed to a twin upper bunk is seamless. The strong steel bunk bed frame is paired with an MDF board to breathe more life into the bunk bed.

I especially loved the sliding bed, which comes in handy when you have an overnight guest. You can remove the trundle bed and use it as a separate twin bed if you wish. All beds support 400 lbs, making this piece of furniture a winner in a full household. Though there is an extra bed, the assembly process is rather fast, and the clear instructions and tools provided make sure of this.

Pros

  • Steel frame
  • Built-in ladder
  • Full-length guard
  • Removable trundle bed

Cons

  • The rail is no rail guarding when a mattress is added
  • The tools aren’t as easy to use

DHP Miles Metal Bunk Bed

This is yet another best heavy-duty bunk bed from DHP. It has a heavy-duty metal bunk frame that includes metal slats and 12.5-inch guard rails. On one side, it has an integrated ladder that attaches to the bottom bunk. The sturdy metallic construction supports 600 lbs (300 lbs on each bunk).

This bunk bed measures 77.5″ x 56.5” x 54”. These bed dimensions make it compact enough to save space. There’s a lot of good things going on with this bunk bed. But if I were to nitpick, I’d have preferred to have enough space under the bottom bunk for storage. I’m also a little concerned that the ends of the metal slats are flat, and they look like they might bend when subjected to high pressure.

Pros

  • Low height and compact
  • Sufficient height in the bottom bunk
  • Doesn’t shake crazily

Cons

  • Ladder only installs in one spot
  • Ladder rungs are tiny and uncomfortable to climb

Twin Over Full Metal Bunk Beds

This Twin over Full Metal Bunk Bed is another great piece from Olela. The frame is made from alloy steel and has gas shielded welding on the joints allowing it to support 400 lbs on each bunk.

The lower bed has a low profile for easy climbing. Also, it has full-length guardrails to keep younger children safe and a 3-step ladder on one end. The metal slats offer superior support and negate the need for box spring mattresses.

The contemporary design bed is delivered with an instruction guide which I felt was vague. Individuals that aren’t mechanically minded might have trouble assembling the bed without support. It would also be better if the bunks were labeled.

On the bright side, the screw holes line up perfectly, and Olela provides Allen wrenches that simplify the assembly process. Also, the low profile makes the bed perfect for rooms with low ceilings.

Pros

  • Sturdy
  • Low profile for extra safety
  • Timeless style
  • Integrated ladder

Cons

  • Some difficulty in assembly

And The Winner Is…

Buying Guide

Here are several things to consider when choosing the best heavy-duty bunk bed for obese people.

  • Weight capacity – this is a crucial element in bunk beds for overweight people. The bunk bed should have a high weight limit to support your weight. Though some bunk beds have metal frames, they cannot support obese people. Always read the description and see how much weight the top and lower beds each can support. The DHP Twin-Over-Futon Convertible Couch and Bed can support 200 lbs and 600 lbs on the lower and upper bunks, respectively.
  • Easy assembly – we all appreciate easy-to-assemble items, especially if it’s a bunk bed. Some beds take longer to assemble than others, and the instructions should be clear enough to provide a great experience. For instance, assembling the Powell Heavy Metal Bunk Bed is a breeze.
  • Ladder – ladders on beds are crucial pieces. They should be comfortable to climb and have a large surface to step. Some beds have shaky, slippery, and uncomfortable ladders, posing a real danger on an unlucky day. Dorel Living Moon Full over Full Bunk Bed with USB Port has such a ladder. On the flip side, DHP Twin-Over-Futon Convertible Couch and Bed have ladders on either side, making positioning in a room easier.
  • Bed design – if you are a home décor lover, pay keen attention to this. Some beds in the list have beautiful designs that can complement any room, and you should find one that matches your room décor. For instance, the Olela Twin Over Full Metal Bunk Beds with Trundle Bed blends metal and MDF board perfectly. But if you want a simple design, the DHP Twin-Over-Futon Convertible Couch and Bed is ideal.

Do bunk beds have weight limits?

Yes, they do. For instance, DHP Twin-Over-Futon Convertible Couch and Bed has an 800 lbs weight capacity. Some people use the material to determine the weight limit. However, not all bunk beds with metal frames are ideal for obese people. And some solid wood frame beds like Max & Lily Solid Wood Twin Bunk Bed have a high weight capacity.

Are metal bunk beds better than wood?

Metal bunk beds are incredibly strong. In many cases, they are also safer than wooden bunk beds and Heavy duty air mattresses. In comparison, metal beds are durable and withstand wear and tear better than wooden frames.
